This year students in 2nd - 5th grade have the opportunity to explore the world through The Passport Club! Each child who decides to participate will receive a passport, choose an individual level of study and collect “stamps” for the passport as they learn some or all of the world’s countries over the course of the school year. The program will begin in October, and children will be tested once a month (during 3rd recess) on the countries they have studied. They will have the opportunity to win fun prizes as well!
The goal of this program is to plant the seeds of global literacy, as global competency is a complex skill set and takes time to develop. We want your child to gain the attitude, skills and knowledge needed for success in the future.
This program is dependent upon volunteers! We need about 15 volunteers per testing session each month. If you would like to commit to one or more testing sessions, please see the end of this webpage for more information and a link to sign up!
THE PASSPORT CLUB LEVELS 1-5
LEVEL ONE: This is an “introductory level” for any student who wants to focus on five countries per month. Typically, first graders start at this level. Most of the LEVEL ONE countries are large and fairly well known or are significant in some way such as Panama for the canal. Students will learn a total of 40 countries by year’s end. All students are encouraged to participate in at least LEVEL ONE of The Passport Club.
LEVEL TWO: This “intermediate level” involves ten countries per month (five in level 1 and five in level 2). This is most commonly done in second grade. LEVEL TWO teaches the location of 80 countries.
LEVEL THREE: This “advanced intermediate level” involves fifteen countries per month, (except December), or 115 countries by year’s end. It is a good “compromise level,” and will have some of the lesser-known countries and island groupings. It is most often used in third grade classrooms.
LEVEL FOUR: At this challenging “expert level,” students will learn all the independent nations over the course of the year. Twenty-five countries are studied each month (with the exception of December).
LEVEL FIVE: At this very challenging level students learn all the countries in LEVELS ONE through FOUR, plus the locations and pronunciations of the corresponding capital cities for all countries in LEVEL ONE.
Parents should talk to their child and decide the appropriate level of study for the school year. Most students remain in the same level all year, however the program can accommodate upward or downward movement mid-year. For example, if a student has been ill and wants to move down a level, or if a student has gained confidence and decides to move up a level then they can be checked on a different level that month.
Each student will be given a study map at the beginning of each month. Parents should encourage their children to study their maps regularly.
You might want to make this a family challenge! Learning the locations and pronunciations of the world’s countries is an important starting point in understanding our world. From there students can start to build an understanding of what goes on within the almost two hundred independent nations on our globe. The Passport Club is an effective and fun way to help achieve geographic literacy. Help us give our children the world!

Passport Club Volunteers Needed!
Volunteers play a vital role in the success of The Passport Club. Volunteers will test the children on the countries they have studied and then give them a stamp for their passport for each level they complete. We need approximately 15 volunteers for each testing date.
Testing Times:
- 2nd/3rd grade recess from 1:15-1:30pm (and after)
- 4th/5th grade recess from 1:55-2:10pm (and after until about 2:30pm)
Please plan to arrive by 12:55pm for your first testing session for a mini-training, and by 1:05pm for any subsequent sessions. Depending on the number of students and volunteers participating, we may not finish testing in the 15-minute recess window and will likely need to go back to classrooms after each recess to finish testing students.
